I’ve photographed Mika in 2010 on a huge stage with tons of props and costumes. I got curious when I heard he would perform at Den Atelier, a very small venue. I know a lot of artists who like to perform there because of the smaller size and the cozy atmosphere. Mika was no exception, entering on stage he said straight away that he didn’t want to use any of these, he just wanted fans, music and fun. And fun it was, …. same as the first time around even with big props I left the venue with a smile on my face.
On a technical note: It wasn’t different at all from his speech at the beginning, quite simple but very effective. Mika was lit with a white spot nearly all the time, which caused the rest of the scene to bath in some darkness. But it was just a matter of finding the right shutter speed. I used the 15mm F2.8 and the 24-70 F2.8 for this gig.
